16 CFR Part 1632 Mattress Smoldering Ignition Test Apparatus

The DX8034 test apparatus is the equipment set used to run the smoldering ignition resistance test on mattresses and mattress sets described in 16 CFR Part 1632. A lighted reference ignition source is placed on the mattress surface, and the length of the resulting char is measured to judge how far the fire spreads. The set-up is built around a flat test platform, a fibreglass test surface, a marking template and a mounting box, so each specimen is positioned the same way for every test.

What the Set Includes

• Test platform and work table — six stainless steel stools carry two 1900 × 900 × 25 mm fibreglass boards. The mattress lies flat at an adjustable 350–450 mm height, so the whole surface stays in view during the test.
• Fibreglass test surface — an additional 1900 × 900 × 25 mm board (about 1 inch thick) is supplied for thin flexible mattresses and mattress pads that would otherwise sag into the platform.
• Aluminium marking template — places a 1 inch reference mark around each ignition position, so the char boundary is read at the same line on every specimen.
• Plywood mounting box — 304.8 × 304.8 × 152.4 mm (12 × 12 × 6 inch) with two 12.7 mm (1/2 inch) vent holes, used to condition and hold the foam specimen.
• Char measuring ruler — linear scale graduated in millimetres, 0.1 inch and 1/16 inch for reading char length after each test.
• Water spray bottle — spray nozzle bottle used to put out the ignited area of the mattress once the test time is reached.

Consumables Supplied by the User

• Standard reference ignition source, two cartons, as defined by the test method.
• Pressurised water extinguisher or other suitable fire fighting equipment, kept at hand in the test room.
• Polyurethane foam specimens for the preliminary check: density 1.2–1.5 lb/ft³, indentation load deflection 22–35 lb, sample at least 12 × 12 inch (304.8 × 304.8 mm) square and 1/4 inch ± 1/32 inch (6.3 ± 0.8 mm) thick, with no flame retardant treatment.

Technical Specifications

How the Test Runs

The mattress is laid flat on the platform at working height. The aluminium template marks the 1 inch reference line around the ignition position, a lighted reference ignition source is placed on the surface, and the test is left to run for the time set by the standard. When the time is reached the area is sprayed with water, the specimen is removed, and the char length is read with the graduated ruler against the 1 inch mark. Because the platform height, board thickness and ignition position are fixed by the set, results stay comparable between specimens, operators and laboratories.
