DX8033 16 CFR 1633 Mattress Flammability Test Machine

The DX8033 mattress flammability test machine evaluates how a mattress or mattress set behaves when it is exposed to an ignition source that simulates burning bed sheets, and measures the resulting heat release rate and total heat release. 16 CFR 1633 is the United States federal standard, and every manufacturer and importer of mattresses and mattress sets must comply with it before the product can be sold in the US market.

Technical Specifications

Test Method and Pass Criteria

The mattress or mattress set is placed on top of the steel test frame and exposed to two T shaped burners with a total heat output of 27 kW. The side burner is ignited for 50 seconds and the top burner for 70 seconds. With the flame left uncontrolled, the smoke produced by the sample is collected and analysed by the gas analysis instruments. Heat release rate must be steady and continuous and the following criteria apply:

• Peak heat release rate during the 30 minute test must not exceed 200 kW
• Total heat release during the first 10 minutes must not exceed 15 MJ
• Three mattress specimens of the same model must pass the test simultaneously; if one specimen fails either criterion, the model is judged as failed

Laboratory Notes for Passing 16 CFR 1633

• Mattress edge stitching thread is critical: it must be a fire resistant thread, because a thread that breaks early releases the mattress structure and lets the fire spread into the filling.
• A thin layer of 16 CFR 1633 compliant fibre batting under the top filling is enough to stop flame propagation; with these two details, the core materials do not need to be fire retardant, although BS 5852 compliant materials add a safety margin.
