Test Method - Smoldering Ignition Test

16 CFR 1632 uses the smoldering ignition test to simulate the scenario of a smoldering source falling or being placed on a mattress. Filterless ignition sources are used as the fire source, and the mattress is placed horizontally on a flat surface.

Sample Preparation

• 6 sets of finished or prototype samples are normally required
• For mattresses containing chemical flame retardants, samples are aged per AATCC 124-82 with 10 wash and dry cycles before testing (except disposable mattresses), to simulate real-world use conditions
