IEC 62730 vs IEC 62217 Insulator Aging Standards for Turkish Power Utilities Explained

Turkish utilities and insulator manufacturers frequently ask how IEC 62730 and IEC 62217 relate, and which standard they should apply when qualifying polymeric insulators. Both standards address the aging and performance of composite insulators, but they serve different purposes in the qualification workflow. Understanding the distinction helps utilities design a complete and cost-effective test program.

IEC 62217: Design Qualification

IEC 62217 is the design test standard for polymeric insulators. It applies a defined set of type tests to a limited number of specimens to confirm that a given design can withstand expected service stresses. Tests include tracking and erosion, power arc, and mechanical load verification. Passing IEC 62217 is normally the first step to demonstrate that an insulator design is fundamentally sound.

IEC 62730: Extended Multi-Stress Aging

IEC 62730-2024 specifies a long-duration multiple stress test that combines solar simulation, UV radiation and salt spray for 5000 hours. It is intended to evaluate the combined effects of environmental stresses over an extended period, providing deeper insight into long-term field performance than shorter design tests. It is increasingly required for premium projects and long-life asset programs.

Applying Both Standards in Turkey

  • Use IEC 62217 for initial design approval and type testing.
  • Use IEC 62730 for long-term reliability validation.
  • Combine both to benchmark competing insulator suppliers.
  • Maintain test evidence for TSE-aligned compliance dossiers.

In practice, Turkish utilities use IEC 62217 for initial design approval and IEC 62730 for long-term reliability validation and supplier benchmarking. Daxian provides equipment supporting both standards, including the IEC 62730 multi-stress chamber and IEC 60587 tracking and erosion test apparatus, so laboratories can run a complete qualification program under one roof.

For utilities procuring large volumes of insulators, the combined program delivers strong return on investment. Design tests confirm that a supplier's product is fundamentally acceptable, while the 5000-hour aging test distinguishes products that will perform over the long term from those that may degrade after only a few years in service.

This evidence is especially valuable when negotiating framework agreements or long-term supply contracts with multiple vendors. A well-documented IEC 62730 result gives procurement teams an objective basis for comparing bids and rejecting suppliers whose products have not demonstrated adequate aging performance.
